August 2026 Visa Bulletin: What Green Card Applicants Need to Know

Waiting for a family-sponsored or employment-based Green Card?

The monthly Visa Bulletin determines when many applicants may be able to move forward based on their preference category, country of chargeability, and priority date.

The August 2026 bulletin includes important movement in several family- and employment-based categories. Applicants from countries with heavy demand — including India, China, Mexico, and the Philippines — should pay particular attention to their category and priority date.

The Department of State also warns that some employment-based categories may retrogress or become unavailable before the end of the fiscal year if annual limits are reached.

Where Should You Apply for a U.S. Visa in 2026?

The rules for choosing where to schedule a U.S. visa interview have changed.

As of July 2026, most nonimmigrant visa applicants are instructed to schedule their interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate in their country of nationality or country of residence.

Applicants who choose a different country may face additional difficulties and may need to prove that they actually reside there.

This is especially important for people considering traveling to another country simply because that embassy appears to have a shorter interview wait time.

Need a U.S. Tourist Visa Quickly? Understanding the 2026 Expedited Appointment Pilot

The Department of State is testing a new expedited appointment option at selected U.S. embassies and consulates through December 31, 2026.

At participating locations, eligible B-visa applicants may have the option to pay an additional $750 expedited appointment fee for an interview within 10 business days, subject to availability.

This is separate from the normal $185 visa application fee, and the program is voluntary.

Availability depends on the participating embassy or consulate.

U.S. Visa Processing Changes in Africa: What Applicants Should Know

Beginning August 1, 2026, the United States realigned routine visa services from a number of African posts to designated regional visa hubs.

Applicants affected by the change may now need to schedule their visa appointment and pay the required fee through a designated regional processing location rather than their local U.S. embassy or consulate.

Anyone applying from an affected country should confirm the correct processing post before paying fees or making travel arrangements.

Immigrant Visa Interviews: Where Will Your Interview Be Scheduled?

Immigrant visa applicants generally need to complete their interview in the consular district responsible for their place of residence, or in their country of nationality when applicable.

If the National Visa Center has already scheduled an interview and the applicant wants the case transferred to another post, the request should generally be made through the National Visa Center rather than directly with the embassy.

Exceptions may exist for certain humanitarian, medical, or foreign-policy circumstances.

Best for: Family-based, employment-based, and other immigrant visa applicants using consular processing

DV-2026 Diversity Visa: Important September 30 Deadline

People selected for the DV-2026 Diversity Visa program should pay close attention to the end of the U.S. fiscal year.

Eligibility for DV-2026 visas ends on September 30, 2026. A DV-2026 visa cannot be issued after that date, and visa numbers may potentially be exhausted even earlier.

Being selected in the Diversity Visa lottery does not guarantee that a visa will ultimately be available.

Applicants should follow their case carefully and rely on official Department of State information.
